Softeners
Water softening is the removal of calcium, magnesium, and certain other metal cat-ions in hard water. The resulting soft water is more compatible with soap and extends the lifetime of plumbing, geysers, etc. Water softening is usually achieved using ion-exchange resins (mixed bed resin).
Similar processes are used in de-ionization for very high purity water.
